Thailand – Krabi

We had 2 and 1/2 days to spend in one of the islands in our Thailand trip. We explored multiple options….

  1. Pattaya
  2. Phuket
  3. Krabi
  4. Ko Samui (East Coast)

During July it’s a wet season on west coast (Krabi, Phuket) , where as in east coast it is not that much rain . So people suggest/recommend east coast (Ko Samui) during this time of the year.

We picked Krabi to avoid the heavy tourists in Phuket.

Things to do in Krabi

  • Railay Beach
  • Four island tour
  • Ao Nang beach
  • Phra Nang Beach
  • Rock Climbing
  • Caves

We decided to stay in Railay Bay Resort in Krabi. Railay Bay can be reached only by boat. It was raining when we reached Krabi. We had pick up scheduled and they received us from airport. Mini Van took us to the Railay port office. From port office to boat we took Auto/Tuk Tuk. They covered all our bags with plastic bags in the port office. It was raining heavily and we were not able to open eyes in the boat. From boat we got transferred to Tractor(Low tide). Seems like there is high tide and low tide, In the afternoon it was low tide, so got transferred through the tractor. Next is the Golf cart to the Resort office. Different transportation vehicles Mini Van, Tuk Tuk, Boat, Tractor and Golf cart.

We relaxed in the resort office until our room is ready and had our lunch. Nice plating for the food. Thai food was very tasty with spice levels as you wish. There are half a day cooking classes in all tourist destinations in Thailand.

Railay Bay

Paradise for rock climbers…

This is the best place to relax on the beach all day. Beautiful beach surrounded by the lime stone cliffs. We got a private villa with swimming pool. Beautiful weather with rain. There was wind along with rain, so all tours are cancelled. We were planning to go on 4 island tour, but unfortunately it was cancelled due to wind.

Fresh food cooked on the street. So many varieties of the fruits and fresh fish. There is down town or street of restaurants we can walk through. It was about an hour walk if we go slowly and enjoy the atmosphere and people.

During the evening time, it was low tide. We walked along the cliffs to the other side.

We walked along the east side of the Railay in the evening. There are so many Thai massage places in the walking street. We preferred the massage at resort as the quality was comparatively high.

Our Day 2 in Krabi

Beautiful decorations during the break fast .

Gorgeous views of the Railay Bay with high tides in the morning.

Phra Nang Beach & Phra Nang Cave (Princess Cave)

Walk Southward along Railay East and make a right towards the trail to the viewpoint. Bypass the viewpoint and continue onward until the trail opens up to Phra Nang Beach. Along the way there are many lime stone caves.

On the southern side of Phra Nang Beach, you’ll find a strange little cove full of phalluses! These phalluses carvings are placed here by fisherman, other locals, and visitors as offerings to the princess of the cave who will hence bring them prosperity.

Here’s what the sign at the Princess Cave reads to explain the strange ritual:

“Local people, fisherman and navigators believe and hold faith in the Princess of the Pranang Cave that she will preserve and protect their livelihood and fulfill one’s wishes. When their wishes are fulfilled, votive offerings would be made at the shrine. Common gifts are flowers and incense sticks, but usually the spirits of the Goddess are offered a special gift, the lingam, which is carved from wood. The belief of the lingam and holy womb shall create fertility and prosperity to the whole earth and mankind.”

Back to the Railay

Lunch

Time for some fuel for us after all the walking to and from the Phra nang beach.

Walking Street

There is always some incident to remember in any trip.  A small incident here as well. There was a shooting at one of the bar on the walking street on our Day 1 and some of the street was closed. We went again on our second day.

Our Day 3

We started back from Krabi to continue our journey…

Bye Bye Krabi
